Melbourne New Years Eve 2021 will have a drone show at a fully vaccinated CBD event

A spectacular drone light show is heading to Melbourne to help the city ring in the New Year, but those who wish to attend must book a ticket.

On December 31, more than 300 drones with lights will create shapes at iconic Melbourne locations including the MCG.

“This will be the biggest swarm drone show Australia has ever seen,” said Mayor Sally Capp.

But to be COVID-safe, the CBD event will be ticketed and all attendees must be fully vaccinated.

“This is how we’ve been able to open up here in Melbourne and we want to stay open,” Capp said.

“We want to be able to accommodate as many people as possible in complete safety. “

There are 40,000 free tickets to be won.

The ballot opens this week and will be available through Ticketek and the full New Years Eve program kicks off on Thursday.

Four enclosures will be fenced on New Years Eve in the city for the event.

These are Flagstaff Gardens, Docklands, Treasury Gardens and Alexandra Gardens.

Eight alleys across the CBD will also be transformed into street parties with alfresco dining, entertainment and live music.

The Melbourne fireworks were canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
