FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) – Members of Team USA’s Paralympic team will take the honors and illuminate 40,000 lights on a 40-foot-tall Colorado blue spruce top, ushering in the holiday season at the 17th Annual “Christmas on Broadway” Celebration .

The event will take place on Friday, November 19 at Broadway Plaza, located outside the Shine & Hardin building.

2020 was the first year that Santa Claus arrived by fire truck – a vintage 1976 model.

It will feature a parade along Broadway that will bring Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus to the plaza aboard a 1976 Pierce fire truck – a nostalgic merry-go-round that was introduced last year.

The duo will hand out Christmas hats and stockings to the children along the way.

The parade will take place on Broadway and Creighton around 5:30 p.m.

In the plaza itself, the cast of the Fort Wayne Ballet’s presentation of “The Nutcracker” and the Fort Wayne Community Schools “b Instrumental” program will provide entertainment.

This year’s showpiece at Broadway Plaza is an almost 40-year-old tree donated by Keith Baughman and his family.

One of the enhancements to the event is a computer control system for the light display, which will now feature a variety of patterns and colors.

The Plaza’s 2021 Christmas tree will feature all the colors of years gone by, but will also be computer-controlled, with schedules that change the display throughout the holiday season.

Participants will be treated to holiday drinks provided by Prairie Farms Dairy, which will include hot chocolate and eggnog. Santa’s reindeer will be present at the lighting of the tree, as well as the “Polar Express”, a miniature train ride for the youngest to ride and enjoy.

“Since its inception 17 years ago, when only 150 people gathered to see the lighting of the crowds that now number in the thousands, we are proud to continue the tradition of this family event which marks the official start of the Fort Wayne holiday season. Said legal partners Steve Shine and Tom Hardin of Shine & Hardin, LLP, the creators and organizers of the event.

ABC21 will broadcast live, starting at 5 pm, the celebration, which will end with a fireworks display above “Quartier ’07”.

Sponsors include IU Health and Federated Media, whose radio stations include partners from ABC21 to WOWO AM and FM.

The Fort Wayne Komets will bear the costs of the fireworks display and join other corporate sponsors including Lake City Bank, Chuck and Lisa Surack / Sweetwater, Prairie Farms Dairy and Trinity English Lutheran Church, who have all come together to present this holiday gift to the community.
