SF Chinese New Year parade returns in 2022 after pandemic hiatus

The San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce announced the return of its iconic festival on Wednesday. The parade for 2022 – the year of the tiger – is scheduled for Saturday, February 19.

“Over the past 18 months, the San Francisco community has shown great courage and resilience to keep the impact of the pandemic manageable and bring the city back to life by safely reopening businesses and events with appropriate security measures, ”the organizers wrote in a statement. Release.

To strengthen COVID-19 safety precautions, festival organizers are demanding that all eligible volunteers and members of their parade be fully immunized and wear masks throughout.

The San Francisco New Years Festival and Parade began in the 1860s and has been run by the chamber since 1950. According to the chamber, the city’s parade is the largest Lunar New Year celebration outside of Asia .

The Lunar New Year, observed across much of East Asia, occurs on a different day each year depending on the lunar calendar, usually between mid-January and mid-February. In 2022, it will fall on February 1. In San Francisco, a Chinese New Year celebration is scheduled that day in Chinatown, followed by several other events leading up to the February 19 parade – with more details to come, according to the event site.

The title sponsor of the 2022 parade will be Alaska Airlines, the chamber said. Bleacher seats will be available for booking through Eventbrite by mid-November.
