Vigo County employees may have something to look forward to next year
VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Vigo County employees may have something to look forward to next year.
On Tuesday evening, the Vigo County Council met to take a first look at the proposed budget for 2022. Each year, the council makes an annual update of the overall budget. For now, the budget is higher than last year, but with this increase there are positive benefits for county employees.
Currently, the proposed budget for 2022 is approximately $ 71.5 million. This is an increase of $ 485,000 from 2021.
“The cost of running the county increases every year, and in reality $ 400,000 is not that high considering a budget of $ 72 million,” said Vicki Weger, one of the county council members. from Vigo.
However, with this increase there are positive benefits for all county employees, including a salary increase of up to 5%.
“They’ve had years where they haven’t had a raise at all and that has held them back,” she said. “If they can get a 5% raise, we [can] bring it to what comparable Indiana counties are doing because we don’t want to lose our employees. “
Weger says raising wages is one of the main ways to encourage locals to stay and continue living in Vigo County.
“It’s very difficult to hire people now, so we want to make a really special effort to keep our people,” she said. “They are precious to us.”
There are still several things to consider before the final budget vote. But with everything taken into account, council members say they want to make the best decisions for the benefit of everyone in the county.
“We want the government to work the best it can with the money we have,” Weger said.
The board is expected to vote on the final budget at next week’s meeting. It’s Tuesday, October 12 at 5:00 p.m. at the Vigo County Annex.
